The Arab Fertilizer Association (AFA) is pleased to announce the key recommendations of the Economic Workshop on Fertilizer Economics and Future Challenges, held in Amman, Jordan, from October 14 to 16, 2025.
Enhancing Food Security Through Industrial Fertilizers:
- Encourage R&D in blending organic and synthetic fertilizers for environmental and economic sustainability.
- Launch awareness campaigns for farmers on the importance of macro, secondary, and micronutrients in crop quality.
Managing Global Fertilizer Demand:
- Develop predictive models for fertilizer demand based on population growth and dietary shifts.
- Monitor climate change impacts on agricultural patterns and fertilizer needs.
Adapting to EU Carbon Pricing Mechanisms (CBAM & ETS):
- Prepare local producers to comply with EU carbon pricing systems to avoid market losses.
- Invest in emission-reduction technologies in ammonia and fertilizer production.
Advancing Clean Ammonia Markets (Blue & Green):
- Support green ammonia projects powered by renewable energy to reduce carbon footprints, alongside expanding existing projects.
- Encourage public-private partnerships to accelerate the development of new projects aimed at addressing population growth challenges
Optimizing Potash Production and Consumption
- Support cost-effective mining techniques like solution mining and evaporation.
- Improve transportation infrastructure to lower delivery costs to key markets.
Managing Sulfur Markets and Rising Industrial Demand:
- Invest in infrastructure for storing and transporting liquid and solid sulfur.
- Support domestic sulfuric acid production to reduce import dependency.
- Track industrial demand shifts (e.g., nickel and battery sectors) to guide expansion priorities.
Navigating Global Trade Challenges
- Develop contingency plans for fertilizer supply amid rising trade barriers and sanctions.
- Strengthen regional cooperation to mitigate the impact of EU and US tariffs.
Reshaping Global Fertilizer Trade Routes:
- Develop ports and logistics hubs to facilitate redirected trade flows.
